KBA Impact Award
winner for the
"Best College
Newscast"
"Don't Forget Us"
I worked as the producer for a student documentary called "Don't Forget Us" where I traveled with a team of four other journalism and film students to capture the story of a student's current walk through the Holocaust.
KBA's statement following the award said:
"Best Public Affairs/Gracie Turner, Maddie Heineman, Lucy Bryson for “Don’t Forget Us”: “Powerful. Impactful. Creative. Well done. The student's first-person video reflecting on the experience was profound.”
The award also won the Highbridge Film Festival award for Best Documentary and won an Ohio Valley Student Production award (often referred to as a Student Emmy).
EPIC Sports
During the semester of fall 2023, I worked in a small group directed study where we created a new sports show from start to finish. We worked in partnership with the Asbury Sports Digital Network to create a fully produced pre-show to play before certain live home games. I worked to organize all aspects of the show to make it a reality and worked to produce the show each week. Additionally, I helped film, edit and write for the content in the show.
Live Sports Production
I helped coordinate talent and crew with assistance from the Asbury Sports Digital Network team to create a well-rounded live stream. I crafted a blueprint for the format with RundownCreator that is planned to be used for future games. We began to incorporate a crafted pre-show, halftime, and post-show coverage plan and added in the use of a sideline reporter for mid and post-game interviews.
I continued my work in the fall of 2023
Asbury AM
During my Junior year at Asbury I helped to create a course that was responsible for building our school's first ever morning talk/news show. I worked with the class as the lead producer to build an entirely new format and blueprint for new kind of show. We created all original content that I worked to organize each week for a fun and newsworthy program.
Election Night Coverage
I worked to produce an hour-long live Election Night special for the Collegian. We had live coverage of voting as well as pre-recorded videos about student impact and candidates running for city council. The night posed many problems, but it required all of the crew and myself to use on-the-job problem-solving to produce well-rounded coverage done to the best of our ability with the limited resources.
Highbridge Film Festival Livecast
I worked as the producer for the 2023 Highbridge Livecast. After being the assistant producer in 2022, I joined the Special Events class to be in charge of the full production. I was in charge of a crew of 28 people and worked through all elements of the show. I wrote almost everything, overall all content, designed all video elements to be in line with the theme, hired the crew, and worked to make sure the show went smoothly during the live filming.
Valentine's Day Look-Live
For my Media Performance class, we created original look-lives to practice our on-air skills.
Written Pieces
I have worked as a sports editor for Asbury's student newspaper, The Collegian, for three years. This year I became one of the news editors in addition to my sports role.
I cover topics ranging from local news, Asbury sports, national stories and even commentary sports news.

"Don't choose politics over your kids"- opinion article
"I love my parents dearly, but because of the political divide in my house, I now dread going home. An unfortunate, but not uncommon, occurrence with young adults leaving their house and prior beliefs."
I have written an 832-word article telling my story and connecting it with others’ journey about the divide politics causes in families.
In the United States, nearly one in five voters say that politics have hurt their relationships. At just 20 years old, my story is within that 19% of people who have experienced strife because of politics.

"Well I haven't eaten today"- feature article
"When she was just 12 years old, Kaitlyn McCracken began into her long-term eating disorder because a relative commented on her body. After battling with her ED for nearly seven years, McCracken has found herself in a place of “recovery,” but her journey impacts her daily.
She sees the signs and warnings that experts do about the dangers of the phrase “Well, I haven’t eaten today,” which is ever present on college campuses. The flippant nature of meal skipping can pose a threat to students by leading them to potentially harmful eating disorder habits.'

"The shot that shaped a semester" - feature article
Just before competing in her freshman year of golf at Asbury Univeristy, Anna Hunsinger had a season-altering injury that altered her entire plan for college. She battled the issues from the injury and the consequent struggles with class, motivation, and her faith.

"Beauty shouldn't always equal pain"- opinion article
The world of "beauty" and cosmetics is often tainted with the cruel practice of animal testing. In my opinion article, I examine the ethical ramifications of this as well as address other countries' stances and alternatives for the harmful practice.
WRTV Articles
During my summer at WRTV, I spent around two weeks writing articles for their website and accrued a number of bylines on their website. The stories range from simple news stories to more extensive stories I went out to cover.
Some of the most encompassing stories I worked to create include:
Indy community groups, delivery service partnering to fight food insecurity (wrtv.com)

IU released a new suicide prevention screening that could save lives (wrtv.com)

Gen Con says it's ‘deeply troubled’ by current abortion legislation (wrtv.com)

WJI Portfolio
During the summer of 2023, I attended the World Journalism Institute in Sioux Center, Iowa. There, I expanded my multimedia knowledge and grew in my writing, video-making, and podcast-building skills. Here is the portfolio of all my major projects during my time there. Pieces were edited by leading professionals at World and other connections in the industry.
THE STORY BEHIND THE SEAM
This is the story of Olena (Ellen) Surzhykova. She is a seamstress who had to leave her home in Ukraine after Russia invaded.

I was able to meet Ellen and tell her story through the help of a translator (her daughter-in-law, Adel). My video was shown on World Watch following my time at WJI.
SUSHI TO YOU PODCAST
During my time at WJI, I learned how to make a podcast. During my first fully complete story, I worked with a partner to cover the story of a local business, SushiToYou, run by two brothers.
Take a moment and listen to their story:
WRITTEN PIECES
I worked on a lot of written stories both before Sioux Center and during, take a look.
Interchurch pantry fighting food insecurity
I wrote a story about an interchurch food pantry in my hometown, and worked with Russ Pulliam to make edits to the story.
Going the extra mile
In a prompt about the person who inspires me the most, I wrote a story about my little brother who has overcome a lot of obstacles to follow his passion. Russ Pulliam helped me hone down this story after rounds of edits.
A delicate touch
After attending the Sioux City Tulip Festival I met Christina Westra and had the opportunity to tell her story about how her business was started.
